A Simple Faith
Times and people really haven’t changed all that much from two thousand years ago. The message of the gospel is a simple message of hope and yet people seem to be compelled to add to it, take away from it, change it.
In the book of Galatians, the Apostle Paul writes to tell them that he is amazed that they are so quickly deserting Him who called them by the grace of Christ for a different gospel. He goes on to say that some have come in disturbing the Galatians and want to teach a distorted gospel – which is really not the gospel at all. And Paul does not mince words when he tells them that such people are accursed…he says this twice to make his point. Strong words for those who distort the truth.
It appears that those who came in to teach this “new gospel” were set on adding the Law to the gospel. The gospel itself is very simple. I Corinthians 15:1-8 tells us that:
- Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures (it was prophesied of in the Old Testament and fulfilled in Jesus)
- Christ was buried.
- He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures. (Proving that God accepted His sacrifice for us)
- Christ appeared to many after His resurrection – to Cephas, the twelve, five hundred witnesses, James and all the apostles, and to Paul.
This is the heart of the good news. We, who are lost sinners in need of a Savior, now have one in Christ Jesus. By His grace we believe this and are made new creatures in Christ.
Someone was coming in to the churches of Galatia saying that is all fine and good but you better keep the Law too. Paul’s response was to call such people accursed. In Christ Jesus we are set free from the Law and made alive to God in Christ. So don’t make it more complicated that it is.
The gospel is filled with hope, it’s simple and it’s free. Have you turned from your sin to believe in the Savior Jesus Christ?
